28 September 2010

Walkers, cyclists and kayakers all ventured ‘Down by the Riverside’ at Kelham Island Museum on Saturday 25th September.

Delivered in partnership with the Upper Don Walk Trust, the event attracted a huge number of visitors and encouraged families to explore a stretch of the riverside walk in Sheffield - an easily accessible trail along Sheffield’s River Don.

Visitors were provided with a wealth of information about the walk, which starts at Lady's Bridge and meanders on to Beeley Wood, Oughtibridge.

Families were entertained with a range of free fun activities and children enjoyed the opportunity to kayak on the goit, helped out by Sheffield City Kayak Club. Whilst cyclists brought along their bikes and were able to take advantage of a free bike health check with Dr Bike and Pedal Ready.

Sheffield willow artist Rachel Poole provided interactive ‘make and take’ willow crafts, and musical entertainment was provided by the ‘Anything Goes’ orchestra.

Helen Gabbitas, Projects Officer for Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust, said: “We had a fantastic day and were delighted by the number of people that attended. It was great to see so many people enjoying themselves and benefiting from our beautiful surroundings and the heritage here in Sheffield, including walkers, cyclists, anglers, canoeists and many more.”

Annual steam event a huge success for Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet

News item: 04 October 2010

Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet was a hive of activity this weekend when over 1000 visitors  joined in the fun at the annual ‘Steam Gathering’.

The two day steam extravaganza marked the end of the 2010 season and featured a collection of steam powered machines including steam rollers, traction engines, and road locomotives.

The hamlet was brought to life with the sights, sounds and smells of working steam engines and hundreds of families viewed the mighty steam powered machines and asked the owners and drivers all about them. Miniature steam engine The Kelham Island Flyer, which is usually housed at Kelham Island Museum, was also in steam and entertaining the crowds.

Niki Connolly, events and marketing officer for Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust, said: “Our annual Steam Gathering has been an enormous success and has attracted a huge number of visitors to the Hamlet. Despite all the rain, many visitors braved the wet weather to come along and see the engines.

Abbeydale’s colourful living history characters entertained the crowds and spoke about Sheffield’s nautical links, explaining that whaling was important in steel making industries, and how whale oil was used as lubrication.

Also at Abbeydale Hamlet was Ridgeway Forge demonstrating a range of time-honoured steel-making skills. They were joined by Sheffield Antiques, who sold vintage items reminiscent of the era.
